Jodorowsky, Dune, and the Influence of Dreams

I don't usually write shit online, like a blog or stuff. I did it in the past, back when I wrote in Italian, and I found that I was digressing more often than not, like right now, and you're thinking — you being a sole reader that somehow stumbled upon this thing here, you are thinking, what the hell are the last four lines of words have anything to do with the title.

Tough kitties, that's how I write. And yeah, thanks autocorrect, from now on I'ma say tough kitties forever. Imagine the kitties with their bad-ass bandanas.

But, as you've noticed, I digress.

I do journal tho. For myself. You ain't reading that until I'm dead, and even then, only if I'm somehow famous and my kids need money for a new house or something.

But I have opinions on things, so every now and then, I'll put them out. Don't expect a regular thing, I won't expect you to read this, we'll be friends.

Anyhoo. I love Jodorowsky. His vision for Dune was incredible, albeit crazy. Dalí as the Emperor? Mick Jagger as Feyd-Rautha? Music by Pink Floyd, effects by Dan O'Bannon, art by Giger and Foss? I mean. Best movie never made.

But the big thingy that he created, the mega-book with all the research, images, storyboard, that exists. That was made. And no one can deny that Giger and O'Bannon were a stellar team — after all they ended up making Alien, re-using most of the work they've done for Alejandro.

Which finally brings me to the point of the whole shebang. If you've read this so far, well done. I'll buy you a beer.

Alejandro wasn't able to bring his vision to life. But the passion that ignited the spark, had an impact on movies and art for decades to come. His research of "Spiritual warriors", which was the main thing he looked for on your CV if you wanted to work on Dune — or better, if HE wanted YOU to work on Dune — his research of these people, his vision, impacted everything.

Even the weird (and poetic, and magical, and majestic) images of the witch pricking the hand to collect a drop of blood — and turns it into semen, and then fertilises the egg (that you'll find in a comic book he wrote with Moebius) — isn't that, to borrow his own terminology, a psycho-magical act of generating a fertile land for years to come?

Are Dreams and Dreamers more than just people that walk with clouds in their heads? What happens when you do something out of passion, out of love, not because you can do it but because you WANT to do it, no matter what?

I'm glad Hollywood never made Dune. The promise of that movie lives a better life in my head than any reality could.

Do what you want to do. Don't do it for money or fame or glory. Do it to change the world. Even if you don't make it — your dreams will set motion to million sparks.
